About DEPA
The PSA-DEPA is the first on-line learning in anesthesiology worldwide. It is an educational program under the Office of the PSA President. The DEPA is approved by the Philippine Board of Anesthesiology (PBA) for board examination eligibility for anesthesiologists trained in non-PBA-accredited training institutions as of December 31, 2000 or earlier; and for those who took the DOH-six-month training as of 1997 or earlier and are practicing anesthesiologists for at least 10 years. Graduates of PBA-accredited training institutions can avail of DEPA modules as a review or update on the specialty.
The DEPA is inspired by the Alternative Instructional Design for ARACHNE Project concept by Dr. Minerva Calimag. The holistic approach of DEPA using the integration of the Basic Anesthesia Education (Perioperative Care), Advance Anesthesia Education (Anesthesia Management in Special Cases), Skills Laboratory and Research embodies its goal for excellence and high standard of education. In this program Critical Thinking and Review together with Testwisemanship are also offered. The DEPA aims not only to achieve a passing mark in the PBA certifying examination but to develop a passion for learning among its students.
DEPA takes teaching seriously, as evidenced by a faculty to student ratio of 1:15. There are no large lecture sessions, and all courses are taught by anesthesiologists who are certified Diplomates of the PBA. Most of the faculty members are affiliated Faculty Staff in the College of Medicine of various universities while others are chairpersons or training officers of PBA-accredited residency training institutions and specialized hospitals.
